Cole Joins Bipartisan Efforts to Support Local News Amid Coronavirus

April 30, 2020

Norman, OK – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after joining two bipartisan efforts calling for support of local news journalists, publishers and broadcasters amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Throughout our nation's history, those involved in reporting and publishing the news have gone to great lengths to keep American communities informed," said Cole. "Indeed, amid such emergencies as severe weather and the ongoing coronavirus crisis, many journalists have selflessly risked their own safety and health to chase down a story and accurately report on current events. Along with many other essential roles that have arisen amid this COVID-19 pandemic, I believe that it is simply commonsense to help local news sustain and continue their operations at a time when news reporting is so critical."

On April 20, Cole joined 236 members of the U.S. House of Representatives in sending a bipartisan letter to President Donald Trump, calling for support of local news during the coronavirus crisis. The letter as sent to the president is available here.

Yesterday, Cole also joined 125 members of the House in sending a bipartisan letter to House leadership, requesting support and clarity for local news in the next COVID-19 relief package. The letter as sent to Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is available here.
