Cole Response to 2014 State of the Union Address

January 29, 2014

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) offered the following remarks after President Obama delivered his annual State of the Union address to the nation:

As usual, we heard a gifted speech from the president tonight, and frankly the ending of it was inspiring to every American where the President paid tribute to one of our brave warriors who suffered grievously on our behalf.

But the substance of the speech left a lot to be desired. Frankly, this is a president who has not worked very well with Congress throughout his career, and there is nothing in his speech tonight to suggest he’ll be able to do so going forward. That’s too bad.

In the last month, Congress has actually worked well together: coming to a budget agreement, an omnibus spending bill and probably a farm bill within the week. That suggests when Republicans and Democrats sit down and negotiate they can get things done. The President hasn’t been a part of that process so far; hopefully in the years ahead that will change. But judging from tonight’s performance it’s going to be more of the same.
