Arbuckle Project Maintenance Complex and District Office Conveyance Act Signed into Law
Norman, OK – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after President Donald Trump recently signed into law the Arbuckle Project Maintenance Complex and District Office Conveyance Act as part of S. 47, the Natural Resources Management Act.
First introduced by Cole in 2015 and twice passed in the House, the bill’s inclusion in S. 47 authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to convey all right, title and interest in the Maintenance Complex and District Office of the federal “Arbuckle Project” to the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District in Murray County, Oklahoma. The land conveyance includes the transfer of 2.83 acres of land, a small house and the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District’s building headquarters.
“With the president’s signature on the Natural Resources Management Act, I am proud that legislation I sponsored will also be enacted allowing for local control of the Arbuckle Project Maintenance Complex,” said Cole. “The Arbuckle Project Maintenance Complex provides numerous benefits and services to the surrounding areas, including flood control, municipal water supply and many recreational water activities. Certainly, some facilities are more effectively and efficiently managed at the local level, and I am pleased that this land conveyance will solidify local ownership—further affirming management and control of this Oklahoma stronghold in the Fourth District.”
In 1962, Congress authorized the payment of reimbursable costs for construction, operation and maintenance of the Bureau of Reclamation’s “Arbuckle Project” in south-central Oklahoma. In September 2012, the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District completed repayment of capital costs. In December 2014, the Bureau of Reclamation and the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District entered into an agreement to transfer management of certain facilities. With enactment of Cole’s bill, the federal government will be relieved of all future liability and financial responsibility related to the Arbuckle Project Maintenance Complex.
