Cole Applauds House Passage of Bill to Protect SPR from Non-Emergency Use

January 27, 2023

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R. 21, the Strategic Production Response Act. This legislation would limit non-emergency drawdowns of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and require increases in oil and gas production on federal lands to offset future drawdowns of this reserve. Cole supported the legislation.

"Draining our nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve increases our risk if an emergency or natural disaster were to occur, emboldens our adversaries and is certainly not a long-term solution to the high energy prices Americans are currently paying," said Cole. "The Biden Administration's ongoing war on American energy is the root cause of our current energy crisis and until it reverses course and starts using the resources we have here at home, nothing will change. House Republicans are committed to pursuing an all-of-the-above energy strategy to ease this crisis and put the American people first. I was proud to support this legislation that would provide commonsense solutions to ramp up U.S. energy production and protect our emergency reserves."
