Cole Slams Democrats’ Proposal to Pack the Supreme Court

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after proposals were introduced by Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate that would add four justices to the bench on the Supreme Court.

"Packing the Supreme Court is deeply misguided and reveals that Democrats are just looking for ways to sway future decisions in their favor," said Cole. "Ushering in such a drastic change to one of our nation's most fundamental institutions would represent an outrageous power grab. Moreover, structurally altering the Supreme Court purely for political reasons would ultimately lead to further degradation of public trust in our government and elected officials, especially since the majority of Americans oppose adding seats to the court. I am extremely disappointed that Democrats are ignoring the obvious will of the people in an attempt to advance their own partisan interests. Moreover, dismantling core governmental institutions and processes when it benefits Democrats politically - whether it be taking over the Court by force, reinterpreting budget rules in the Senate or ending procedural rules in both chambers - only hurts current and future minority parties which they are designed to protect. The American people deserve better."
