Cole Statement on H.R. 3401

June 26, 2019

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives voted on H.R. 3401, a supplemental appropriations bill crafted by Democrats to deal with the humanitarian crisis at the southern border.

"For months, Republicans have warned about the humanitarian crisis at the southern border while Democrats called it a ‘manufactured crisis.' More than 50 days ago, President Trump requested money simply to provide for the immediate needs, including resources to take care of thousands of vulnerable unaccompanied children arriving. Now that funding is just days away from running out, Democrats are finally acknowledging the crisis but with a partisan solution that will never become law in divided government.

"The good news is that the Democrats finally agree something must be done. The bad news is they waited until the eleventh hour to act and with a bill that will never pass the Republican-led Senate or be signed into law by the president. If the Democrats truly want to improve conditions and ensure migrant children and families are properly cared for, they should work with Republicans on a bipartisan bill rather than play politics with vulnerable lives."
