Cole Statement on H.R. 5
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) made the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 5, the Equality Act. Cole opposed the legislation.
“Certainly, Republicans agree that all Americans should have equal rights under the law. My opposition to H.R. 5 does not mean anything to the contrary,” said Cole. “I absolutely believe in protecting and preserving the fundamental American principle of equality, but there are too many unanswered questions about how this particular legislation would work in practice. On such a consequential issue that would significantly alter existing law, there needs to be more discussion and bipartisan engagement. That was not the case with H.R. 5.”
