Cole Named Distinguished Congressional Champion for Extraordinary Support of Medical Research

September 22, 2022

Washington, D.C. – This week, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) recognized Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) with the Distinguished Congressional Champion Award for Extraordinary Support of Medical Research. Cole was selected as a recipient of this award for his leadership and role in boosting funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support biomedical research. During Cole's tenure as the top Republican of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, the NIH budget has increased by 49 percent since fiscal year 2015.

"Cancer is a terrible disease that tragically affects almost every American family in some form," said Cole. "I have long supported the NIH's mission to not only improve treatments for patients, but ultimately find a cure and save lives through biomedical research. This is something I have been proud to champion, and I am encouraged that this important issue is met with bipartisan consensus year after year. I was honored to accept this award and remain committed to building on this progress in the fight against cancer."
