Cole Slams House Democrats’ Deemed FY 2023 Budget

June 8, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives adopted H. Res. 1153, a procedural resolution which included a provision to deem passage of H. Res. 1151, providing for budget allocations. This allowed House Democrats to bypass debate and a separate vote on a just introduced budget for fiscal year 2023.

"As inflation rages and gas prices hit record high after record high, House Democrats remain deeply out of touch with the priorities of the American people. Their latest stunt? Avoiding debate altogether and an actual vote on a just introduced budget that was yet again cobbled together behind closed doors in the Speaker's office. As has been the trend with Democrats, this budget went through no committee process and lawmakers had no opportunity to amend it. In fact, under their current majority, not once have Democrats marked up a budget in the House Budget Committee. That is four years that Democrats have failed to pass a budget out of committee and bring it to the floor even though they control both. Meanwhile, they continue to propose trillions in irresponsible spending.

"The American people deserve better than Democrats' abdication of their responsibility as the majority party in Congress. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has often said, ‘Show me your budget, show me your values.' Especially after a devastating pandemic and challenging economic times, the American people deserve leaders who are actually willing to thoroughly consider and plan for the future and restore fiscal sanity."
