Washington, DC - Today, Representative Tom Cole (OK-04) issued the following statement on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter:
“Jimmy Carter and I never agreed on partisan politics. However, while I opposed Jimmy Carter politically, I never questioned his decency, his character, or his patriotism. I admired President Carter’s personal integrity, his sheer decency, his deep and sincere religious faith, and his obvious patriotism. He was a naval academy graduate who served our country ably in uniform.
“In fact, I believe my late mother, who was a state legislator during the Carter presidency, summed it up best. When she was asked about her reaction to Carter’s famous ‘malaise’ speech by a local reporter, she quipped ‘Good man, wrong job.’
“That being said, no matter one’s views of his presidency and his politics, we ought to honor the man for his faith, his character, his patriotism, and his advocacy for human rights around the globe throughout his lifetime.
“I extend my sincere sympathy to the Carter family, to his many talented staffers who remain with us, and to his admirers and fans. Jimmy Carter led an extraordinary life and he loved America. That alone is a worthy legacy for any man,” said Congressman Cole.
