Rep. Cole Votes for Fiscal Responsibility, America's Priorities

March 25, 2004

Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman Cole voted for the FY 2005 Concurrent Resolution on the Budget that strengthens our national security, grows our economy and creates opportunity for every American—all while maintaining strict fiscal control. Congressman Cole voted first for the Republican Study Committee (RSC) Budget, which would cut the deficit in half within three years, one year sooner than the committee reported budget and two years faster than the President's proposal.

"Congress must begin setting priorities and following a strict budget just like millions of families do every year. I voted for the RSC budget because it represents real progress towards fiscal responsibility, but when it failed I voted for the Committee's Budget Resolution. The FY2005 budget sets priorities that are important for every American, while holding other non-defense and homeland security funding to 2004 levels."

Tax relief provisions that would have expired during FY 2005 are preserved for five more years under this budget, preventing job-destroying tax increases that would otherwise stifle the growing economy. The House budget gives our troops the funds and equipment they need to win the War on Terrorism by increasing defense spending by 7.1 percent over last year. It increases the Department of Homeland Security by 9.5 percent over last year.

"We must build on the 2001 and 2003 pro-growth tax relief provisions and support policies that promote job creation are included in the FY2005 Budget," Congressman Cole said. "The increase in defense spending demonstrates our clear commitment to a strong national defense and also recognizes that national defense starts with safety at home."

"Through continued funding of health care, education, senior retirement programs and veterans' benefits this budget demonstrates our commitment to a better life for all Americans," Congressman Tom Cole said. "This budget is a good start in reigning in our spending, but I will continue to work with my colleagues to pay down our deficit by focusing on Americans' priorities and targeting waste, fraud and abuse."
