The Oklahoman - Chris Casteel

Sen. Jim Inhofe, of Tulsa, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the air strikes were a good first step but inadequate beside the need for an overall strategy for Iraq, Syria and the broader Middle East.

“While these air strikes in Syria can begin to degrade ISIL capabilities, they certainly won’t defeat or destroy the terrorist army, just as we have seen in Iraq,” Inhofe said, using an acronym for the Islamic State militant group.

“I am encouraged by the participation of our Arab partners in last night’s operations, but am disappointed that other allies in the region, in particular Turkey, were not more involved. This is a shared fight against a clear and growing threat and will require additional cooperation and contributions from our partners.”

Rep. Tom Cole, R-Moore, who has argued that Congress should debate the use of force and give the president specific authorization, said, “I am pleased that the president has led and shown the world American strength, resolve and determination to destroy ISIL by targeting its strongholds in the region through air strikes. He has done so prudently by encouraging the participation and building of a coalition with Arab allies, who are also in danger if ISIL is not destroyed.

“Just as the president has built a coalition abroad, I hope that he will work to build a similar coalition with lawmakers in both chambers of Congress. As I said last week, the amendment that passed to authorize training and weapons of the Free Syrian Army does not authorize force in Syria. Constitutionally, I believe that it is most appropriate and better for the president and the nation if Congress authorizes force. I hope Congress will debate and vote on this as early as possible, allowing our own citizens and the rest of the world to see a united country.”

Cole’s district includes Tinker Air Force Base and Fort Sill. He serves on the House subcommittee that appropriates money to the Defense Department.
