Cole Announces American History Grants Available for Local School Educators
Washington D.C. – Today, Congressman Cole encouraged Oklahoma School Districts and Charter Schools to apply for grants to help educate students in American history. U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced the availability of nearly $100 million for Teaching American History grants.
"I believe knowledge of our heritage is an important part of being an American. As a former educator in history, I see the importance of using information from the past in making present decisions. Understanding history gives students an awareness that will be indispensable when they become the leaders of our nation," Congressman Tom Cole said.
"State Budgets may not have the funding available to support specific programs like this, so it is important that Oklahoma educators take advantage of this opportunity," Cole said.
The teaching American History grant program supports three-year projects to improve teachers' knowledge, understanding and appreciation for American history through ongoing professional development.
